Invented by Italian Americans, Rhode Island Doughboys are typically made of fried pizza dough. They are then dusted with sugar for a sweet and savory treat that has become a beloved staple in the state of Rhode Island. One of the most popular doughboy spots is Iggy’s Doughboys and Chowder, located in a suburb of Providence, Rhode Island.
We made our own Joy Cone twist on this New England favorite — a doughboy waffle bowl sundae!
Recipe makes approximately eight doughboys.
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ¾ cup water
- Vegetable oil as needed
- Confectioners’ sugar
Joy Cone Waffle Bowl Sundae
- 1 box Joy Cone Waffle Bowls
- Vanilla ice cream
- Strawberries, sliced
- Cookie crumbles
- Chocolate sauce
Step 1: Combine flour, yeast, and salt in a large bowl. Add water and mix until dough no longer sticks to the sides of the bowl. Then, knead dough for 10 minutes on a well-floured surface.
Step 2: Place kneaded dough back into the bowl and lightly coat with oil. Cover with plastic wrap and a dish towel. Let rise for 90 minutes to two hours. Remove dough from bowl and punch it with your fist. Let sit for 45 more minutes.
Step 3: Place dough on a lightly floured surface and roll into a log. Slice the log into even parts (about one-inch thick). Flatten each piece into desired shape.
Step 4: Heat approximately two inches of vegetable oil in a pot. Drop dough into oil two to three pieces at a time. Flip the dough until each side is golden brown and remove from oil.
Step 5: Sprinkle confectioners’ sugar on top while hot. Then let cool.
Step 6: Place one doughboy in a waffle bowl and add ice cream, strawberries, cookie crumbles, and chocolate sauce to taste.
