Getting creative with dessert doesn’t have to mean hours spent in the kitchen or an empty bank account. You can satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth with a simple twist on a confectionery classic. We chose to modify a recipe for Boston Cream Pie.
This beloved sweet treat is the official dessert in the state of Massachusetts and is more of a cake than a pie. However, it became popular in the New England area during a time when more pie tins were available for use than cake tins. No matter what you choose to call it, we think you’ll love this fun twist on the classic.
What You’ll Need
- Yellow cake mix – Typically requires water, three eggs, and ½ cup of cooking oil.
- Vanilla pudding mix – Requires two cups of milk
- 1 ½ cups whipped cream
- Chocolate syrup to taste
- Box of 24 Joy Cone Cake Cups
Start by mixing the cake mix according to the directions on the box. Once the cake mix is ready, fill the cake cones 2/3 full of cake mix. To bake, place the filled cake cones in a muffin or cupcake tin and gently put in the oven. Bake the cones filled with cake mix in the oven for 15-17 minutes at 350 degrees. Remove the cones from the oven and allow to cool.
While the cake-filled cones bake, prepare the vanilla pudding according to the directions on the box. Then, fold in the 1 ½ cups of cool whip and combine with a whisk. Set the mixture in the fridge until the cake cones are cooled.Once the cake cones are cool, use a wide straw to create a hole in the middle of each cake. Then use a pastry bag or gallon-sized Ziploc bag (with the corner cut out) to squeeze the pudding mixture into the holes in the cakes.
Now that all the holes are filled with gooey cream, take the chocolate syrup and squeeze it into a small bowl until it is at least one inch deep. Turn each cone upside down and dip the top of the cake-filled cone down into the chocolate, then hold it for a minute to let the excess drip off. Some will continue to run down the sides of the cone, making it pretty and distributing more of the chocolate flavor. Now, serve and eat the Boston Cream Pie Cones with gusto along with anyone who loves an exciting twist on tradition.
